Auditions – “What do they want from me!?”
Posted by Mr. Glenn in BHS Musical
Preparing for any audition is nerve-racking to begin with. A panel of judges…well…judging. On top of that is the ever present question – “What are they looking for? What do they want?”
Well, I’m going to tell you.
First, there is what we do not want. We don’t want people trying to sound like some soundtrack recording. You are high school students, not adult professionals. We also don’t want people being all fake and overacting.
A good auditioner will…
VOCAL: Sing with a free, relaxed tone. The sound will be supported with good air flow. Tightness will not creep into the sound at either high range or loud dynamic level. There will be dynamic expression and use of text to convey meaning. You should be able to facially connect and be open to your “audience”.
DANCE: Have fun and look relaxed while dancing. The judges do not expect perfection of movement. It is supposed to be a little challenging and tell us whether you can learn quickly and adjust. The question is whether you can have fun and smile while getting most of the dance and adjusting when you don’t.
CALLBACK: Acting is about connecting with fellow actors and audience. Let them see you in the character. Be open. Be vulnerable. Dialogue is, in general, conversation. For this audition, the “reading” will be somewhat different. You will asked to play some improv games and other such activities. The point is still the same – connecting with the other people on stage.
VITALLY IMPORTANT LAST POINT!! The judges want you to succeed. We are on your side. We can only have a good show if we have a cast loaded with great performers. So we really want to see you do well! So prepare, relax, and have fun.

I intend to post some thoughts about the upcoming musical auditions and the production itself. We will see if I have enough time to actually follow through. Is anyone reading this? Feel free to reply. Mr. G

Burleson HS Fall Concert

The Fall Concert was a tremendous success. Mr. Conlon and I are very proud of all the choirs – including our guests from HMS and KMS. Classes worked very hard and were well-prepared for the performance.
Mr. Peterson has some great pictures from the show at the following link. You can download for free or order prints from the website. Thanks, Mr. Peterson!!!
