Burleson High School Social Studies Department

Social Studies Department

Dear Parent/Guardian

Below are the grading policies and guidelines of the Social Studies Department of Burleson High School.  This department will follow the general guidelines as set forth by the Board of Trustees of BISD.  These are the specifics a student or parent can expect from this department in the coming year.  Please note the differentiation in the grading policy provided between weighted classes, such as Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses, and those that are standard, or non-weighted, classes. Social Studies strives to be consistent across the curriculum in its approaches to grading, homework, and tutorials.  We also pledge to provide for your child the best possible educational experience within our power to do so.  If there are any questions about your child’s progress or other concerns, please contact me at the below email address or 817-447-5700.  We look forward to productive and enjoyable year with you and your child.

Formative Assessment/Daily Assignment

·         A missing daily assignment becomes a zero if not completed after the student has been assigned to the Homework Recovery Program.  In an advanced class the work is due the next block. In order to assign a zero, the teacher must follow the Late Work Plan policy.  That policy has been distributed to all students, and it is our intention to implement it when necessary.

·         The student is responsible for all work missed in class and will be given the equivalent time missed to complete it.  The teacher will ensure that students returning from an absence receive the missed work.

Summative Assessment

·         A missing summative assessment will receive a grade of “I” and credit will be denied until the summative assessment is completed. If the “I” remains at the end of the semester, a grade of 0 will be recorded and credit denied.  The Social Studies Department will do all that is possible to ensure that your child has every opportunity to take care of any Incompletes.

·         A student has until 5 days before the end of the semester to show mastery of concepts and receive a grade for a missing summative assessment.  This is not a retest, but an opportunity to show that the student has learned the concept and is eligible to raise the grade to a maximum of a 70.

** Exception: long term projects/assignments will be a 0 upon non-completion and the standard amount of time allowed for a retake/retest.

·         A student will have 14 calendar days from the date returned to retake/retest a failing summative assessment. In an advanced class, a student will have 1 week to complete the retake/retest. The maximum grade for a retake/retest is a 70.

·         ALL CLASSES must have a minimum of two summative assessments and six formative (or daily work) assessments per grading period.

·         Projects will be defined as those assignments that exceed at least one week to complete.

Grade Reporting

·         Grades must be recorded in Skyward within one week of the due date, except for long-term assignments.  Those grades can be viewed on the Family Access link on the BISD website.

Tutorials

·         Social Studies will have a posted tutorial schedule, with at least one teacher per topic available for all Social Studies students. Any student is encouraged and welcomed to attend, even if his or her teacher is not available.

·          These tutorials will take place Tuesday through Fridays from 7:45-8:15 and Mondays through Thursdays from 4:00 to 4:35, in designated rooms for this purpose.  The students will be made aware where and to whom they can go to for tutorials daily.

Social Studies Grade Weights

o   Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment Classes:

§  Tests, Projects, Summative Assessments – 70%

§  Daily Work, Quizzes, Homework – 30%

Greetings, o faithful and diligent students!  This is the initial posting of the new Camp Allard blog.  Let me say from the outset that this blog is a very helpful tool in keeping up to date in all my classes, so if I were you (and I thank God that I am not!), I would bookmark this page and refer to it often.  On this blog, you will find readings, reviews, links to sites and sources, and all the Powerpoints I use in my class.  Thus, any slide show we see in class can be reviewed for reinforcement of the material.  Sometimes I will post the slide shows before class and reward those who look on it prior to class with some bonus points on the next quiz.  I also post links to articles and readings that wil add to your understanding of the material presented in class.  There will be more later, so keep up and good luck!  Woo hoo!
