Oct 11

We made it through the first six week and grades look good. We have a pass rate of 88% or higher.  Student are performing well.  We have our first checkpoint test and scores will be available by the end of next week.

We will be starting unit 2 on Tuesday.  This will cover chapters 3 and 4 from the book in addition to worksheets for other sources.

Please make sure your student is doing homework. The next few lessons are foundational to the next 3 years of math.  We will be solving equations using distribution and collecting like terms.  If your student struggles with these concepts, please have them attend tutorial.

Looking for fun activities for the first week of school to review and reinforce fractions, percentages, and decimals.  These are key concepts that we need students to remember from middle school.  Any ideas out there?

What a great 14 days!  I loved getting to know my students before school starts.  You wouldn’t believe some of the things these students did across the last 3 weeks.

They leaned about effective communication, problem solving, multiple representations of problems. meta-cognitive processing (Gee, we are calling that Plan Do Study Act in curriculum courses),

Students now understand that the harder you work the smarter you get even if you don’t understand the first time, you have to try for your neurons and dendrites to grow. (Yes, we talked about the brain in math)

These 15-20 students now have a learning community that will grow to include the students in their classes, the freshman academy and hopefully the students at Burleson High School.

They learned that not all problems have a single solution, but some, like crime scene cases, might only have reasonable solutions and many possible solutions for that matter.

I can’t wait to monitor the success of these students this year! We will have 2 follow up sessions with them as a group after they begin the fall semester.

Starting July 28, 2008, we will begin the Academic Youth Development bridge to high school for entering 9th grade students.  The goal of this program is to prepare students for Algebra 1 by helping them develop problem solving skills and team relationships.
